Sex abuse cult one of many in UK says expert

Cult ringleader Colin Batley 48, was found guilty of more than 35 offences against children and young adults, in Kidwelly, Wales. Batley had moved from London to Kidwelly as the self-styled high priest of the occult group which brainwashed and abused children. Batley, his wife Elaine and two other women all took part in a catalogue of abuse against children and young adults. Victims said the group used occult writings and practices to "brainwash" them, and justify their abuse.

Batley was found guilty of 35 offences, including 11 rapes, three indecent assaults, causing prostitution for personal gain, causing a child to have sex and inciting a child to have sex

An expert on cult recruitment methods says the Kidwelly sex cult could have turned up in any community. Ian Haworth, general secretary of the Cult Information Centre, said the group led by Colin Batley appeared to show many of the classic traits. Mr Haworth has worked as a full-time specialist, consultant and expert witness in cultism since 1979, informed by his own experience as a former member of a cult.

He said that cult leaders often used techniques such as food and sleep deprivation to break people down. From his own expereince Mr Haworth stated that cults can have an impact on a community, wherever that community is and however large or small that community is.

Mr Haworth said between 500 and 1,000 cults were operating throughout the UK, in major cities as well as quiet, rural areas.
